What is Office Settings Backup Wizard 2010?
We developed this application because we were wondering
whatever happened to that nifty Office Settings Backup and Restore Wizard
that used to come with Office versions 2003 and earlier. We needed a
super simple way to backup and restore just our MS Office settings,
without the need for complex tools and configuration changes, and we
needed it to work regardless of where user profiles were located. We
also wanted to be able to mirror the Office settings of one user to
other users. Thus the application was born as the Office 2007 Settings
Backup Wizard. We've now advanced the application to support the new
Office 2010 beta, and added the ability to upgrade previously stored
2007 settings into Office 2010.

What Settings are Backed Up?
Well, that's a big question! Quite frankly there are so many
office settings that it would be quite extensive to list
them all. By far, the vast majority of users, even the most
advanced, will find all of their office 2007 settings are
restorable. Using the Advanced Selections window even allows
YOU to control which settings are backed up. Be sure to
select all the items on the General Tab if you want
everything backed up.
Microsoft Office 2007 settings
are a complex web of intermingled options, spanning and
crisscrossing the suite of products. There may be times when
the personal setting you adjust in one application actually
affects ALL Office applications. So, again, be sure to
include everything under the general tab, in the Advanced
Selections window, to truly get all of your settings. The
General tab options are selected by default.
Note: By design, the application will NOT backup or
restore your Email. Office 2007 and 2010 already
include this ability using "Export" and selecting "Export to
PST file".
Important
Note: By default, Email Account Profiles
is the only option not selected under the advanced
Selections window. If you add any email account
profiles, then restore any older version, it will over-write
your new email accounts! Select this option carefully!
1.) Products whose settings can be saved include;
Microsoft Office Access 2007/2010
Microsoft Office
Excel 2007/2010
Microsoft Office Word 2007/2010
Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007/2010
Microsoft Office
InfoPath 2007/2010
Microsoft Office Visio 2007/2010
Microsoft Office OneNote 2007/2010
Microsoft Office
Groove 2007/2010
Microsoft Office Outlook 2007/2010
Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting v2007 only.
Microsoft Office Project 2007/2010
Microsoft Office
Publisher 2007/2010
Backing Up your Settings
It couldn't get any easier!
Open the program and click
"Backup".
By default the application is already
configured to back up all of your Office 2007 or Office 2010
settings, with the exception of your Outlook Email Account
profiles. This can be adjusted under the Advanced Selections
window.
If
you have any open Microsoft Office applications, the program
will not permit you to backup until those applications are
closed.
After you close your open Office applications, click "Retry"
to re-enable your Backup and Restore buttons.
Be sure
to close out of your Office applications at the end of the
day. This will ensure that any scheduled backups you have
configured will run.
Restoring your Settings
It couldn't get any easier!
Open the program, select a
previous backup, and click
"Restore".
Restore Tip!
You can backup multiple times, giving you the ability to
have multiple configurations backed up.
Restore Tip! All of your open Microsoft Office
applications must be closed in order for the "Restore"
button to be enabled.
Scheduled Backups
Automatic Daily Backups
Inside the Options window, scheduled daily backups.
Choose your desired schedule, and click Apply.
When a
scheduled backup is enabled, your application will not close
when you exit, instead it will sit in your task tray,
waiting to run.
You can "Right-Click" on the task
tray icon, and shut it down completely if desired. Note that
exiting this way will disable your scheduled backup.
!! Remember to close out of your Office applications
at the end of the day, as a scheduled backup can
not run if any Office applications are open.
If you
are in the middle of using your application, when a schedule
is set to run, you will be prompted to choose one of three
options;
- Allow it to run, put it on hold, or cancel today's backup
completely.
If Office 2007 Settings Backup Wizard is
minimized to your task tray, you will not be prompted, and
backup will occur silently.
Scheduled Backups
What to
do if Office is running?
If you left an Office
2007 application open, when backup was supposed to occur, it
will halt. However, in the options menu, you can select one
of three different default actions.
1.)
Cancel for the day: You could choose to
have your backup cancel for the day, resuming again at its
regularly scheduled time tomorrow.
2.) Try
again in 1 hour: Scheduled backup will silently and
swiftly check every hour to see if there are no running
Office applications and start backing up.
3.)
Notify Me: Finally, you could choose to be
notified. If you choose this option, you are given the
opportunity to close your Open Office applications. Select
"Retry" until there are no more open Office applications,
and your backup will immediately resume after clicking Ok.

another!
The product allows for installation to a
second machine for the purpose of transferring your
settings.

Known Issues
These are the known issues in the current release of Office
Settings backup Wizard 2010
Restoring the Quick Access
Toolbar to defaultsWhen you reset the QAT to
defaults, perform a backup, and then later want to restore
to defaults it does not appear to work. The reason for this:
When you “reset” your QAT you removed your customization
file, thus nothing for it is backed up. Even if you
customized later, those new changes will not revert since
the backup you made contained no QAT information. This has
no bearing on users who do in fact have at least one
customization in their QAT.
Office Outlook 2010 will prompt
a security warning when converting an Office 2007 settings
backup to an Office 2010 Settings profileThis is
not technically an issue as much as it is an enhanced
security feature within Office 2010. In order to move your
Office 2007 NK2 contacts into Office 2010 our application
will attempt to connect to your Outlook PST file and perform
a comparison of addresses. This process enables restoration
of addresses that do not already exist in your 2010
Contacts. Simply allow access for 1 minute in order for the
restoration process to continue. Alternatively, you can
remove the NK2 contacts file from the backup set so that it
can be skipped.
Error trying to write to the event logIn isolated
circumstances you may receive this error if your Windows
Operating System is configured not to overwrite older event
log entries with new ones and you are not an administrator
of the machine you are using. To resolve this issue;
1.) Click Start|Run
2.) Type
eventvwr and press enter.
2.) With the Event Viewer now
open, Right-Click on the Application log on the left side
tree.
3.) Select "Properties"
4.) Select the
"Overwrite events as needed" setting. Click Apply and OK.
Error: Could not complete operation on some files and directories. See the date property of the exception for more details.
This can sometimes happen when one of your office apps doesn't close a file properly, leaving it locked up.
Please check the following folder for any files with the following extensions .asd, .asf, .xar, or any office
files with a ~ in it. If you see any of those, delete them. They are locked temporary files. Then try backing up again.
